In Defense of the Top 2% – Howard Roark’s Speech
January 29th, 2012Barack Obama has proposed a budget that punishes the most productive members of society in the name of altruism. You may defend this altruism in the name of self-righteous democracy. But is a democracy a moral form of government? In a pure democracy, a government is sanctioned to follow the will of a majority. Think about this question though – if a majority in a democratic country believes it to be acceptable to eliminate (or live at the expense of) a minority, is that form of government a moral one? Our founders were the first, and the only, people in history to found a government based on a moral principle – they sought to ensure that, regardless of how noble-sounding the cause, no government, no majority group, can impose its will to violate the sacred freedom of even a single individual. Our government was never intended to be a “democracy.” Our founders recognized that a tyranny of the masses was as repulsive as a tyranny of a single ruler. The form of government they gave to us was, as Benjamin Franklin described it, “a Republic if you can keep it.” Our defense of the individual is the very reason we haven’t had a Hitler or a Mussolini; our defense of the individual is the very reason why we are collectively the greatest country this world has ever known.
